Chiesa di San Giovanni Fuorcivitas Follow the road up alongside San Paolo and take a left on Via Cavour to reach a church that is considered the masterpiece of Romanesque Pistoian architecture. Its style, characterized by the lively contrast of green and white, as well as light and dark, took off during the city’s heyday in the 12th and 13th centuries.

The church also contains one of Pistoia’s trio of pulpits (see callout), as well as a polyptych by Taddeo Gaddi (1354), a glazed terracotta Visitation (1445, on the left wall) by one of the della Robbia brothers and, Gruamonte’s Last Supper bas-relief (on the architrave of the door before you enter).
